Where Healing Begins

A young veteran grips the parallel bars beneath the fluorescent lights of a rehabilitation clinic. He tests a new prosthetic leg. His breathing is uneven. The first steps are painful and unsteady. Around him, prosthetists from different countries stand in focused silence, watching carefully.

The step is imperfect. It is hard. And it is real.

Moments like this — messy, human, unfinished — are where UAble begins.

Healing the Whole Person

UAble’s director, Yuliia Matvieieva, understands that recovery requires more than medical devices. With a background in clinical medicine and mental health, and years of experience supporting Ukrainian veterans, she has seen firsthand what happens when physical healing is separated from psychological care.

“Healing the body without healing the mind leads to only a partial recovery,” says Yuliia.

When the first prosthetic devices reached Ukraine, many veterans quickly realized that receiving a limb was only the first step. Rehabilitation services were stretched thin by the scale of injuries. Mental health support was difficult to access. Without follow-up care, even the most advanced prosthetic could become a source of frustration rather than freedom.

Launched in 2024, UAble has already served hundreds of individuals through four interconnected areas of care: prosthetics, physical rehabilitation, mental health, and specialized psychological support for veterans with vision impairment. Every element of the program works together to restore independence and dignity. Through “train-the-trainer” missions, seasoned medical specialists travel to Ukraine to work side by side with local teams—training, learning, and building sustainable expertise.

Meet Yurii

"

After the war, I want to start my business again, spend more time with my family and kids, and travel. I also want to be active in the veteran’s community and support my brothers-in-arms who were seriously wounded in combat.

Before the war Yurii from Kharkiv was a small business owner. Until the very last moment, he couldn’t believe a war with Russia could really happen. When the invasion began, he made a decision to pick up the weapon and join the defense forces to protect his country. A missile strike left him with severe injuries.

The road to recovery seemed impossible. But with UAble’s support, Yurii received intensive rehabilitation, advanced prosthetics, and adaptive equipment. Today, he is walking again, exploring adaptive sports, and even mentoring other veterans navigating recovery.

It is about helping individuals regain independence, reconnect with their communities, and move forward with strength and purpose.
